Communities

Doing stuff with other people <3

QFL was a mostly online community of writers and artists gathering over a shared interest in feminist speculative fiction. We were interested in exploring critically the idea of “queer” “futures”, taking neither of these terms to be fixed or inherent, but rather as starting points for conversations about the politics of belonging, place, presence and bodies.

Each month we devised 'writing' experiments for each other and tested them. These expanded writing techniques came to include movement, voice, mediation and various devices and eventually we became more of a performance collective than a writing group.

Co-facilitated with Dani Williamson.

Some of the workshops we hosted:

  • Spooky writing at a distance; experiments in quantum writing
  • Hybrid futures; telematic writing
  • Queer economies; enacting networks of reciprocity
  • Drag at the end of the world; songwriting for the apocalypse

SoH is an emerging container for experiments and gatherings that explore human relation and connection. Through different conversation methods, we try to get a deeper understanding of the experiences that connect us and learn more about the complexities of human relation.

We are interested in how the ideas and thoughts generated during these gatherings can be collected and synthesised into communal knowledge that can help us further unlearn, deconstruct and question the systems around us.

Frustrated and disappointed by art school management and department politics, in the second year of my masters I started organising with the student union in hopes of contributing towards a sense of self-organisation and autonomy amongst students.

Some stuff we did that year:

  • Formed a coalition between the different student organising groups to have more power on an institutional level
  • Kickstarted the student takeover of the canteen
  • Right to rest series - an event series focused on mental health and rest as resistance

The Hospies were a study group, gathering online for a year every week to read, discuss, unravel, hold space as we encountered the ideas and exercises in the book Hospicing Modernity by Vanessa Machado de Oliveira. Becoming something like a radical therapy group, it was a space of support as we each went through our own personal processes.

We shared some of our favourite exercises and ideas from the book during a workshop we gave as part of the KABK Studium Generale Programme “Overwintering”, organised by Jules Davis-Dufayard and Angela Jerardi, 2025.
